Greetings from Asheboro!

Eleven-year-old chess wizard Will Campbell shook up the NC Scholastic Championships this year, going 5-0 in a strong field of contenders.

I've posted his games at http://www.asheborochess.com. Simply click on the "NC Chess Games Database" and prepare to be amazed. His epic battle with last year's champion David High is not to be missed!

I want to thank the Campbell family for their support of NC Chess, and for making these games available for publication. :D

BONUS GAME: Also posted, Allan Jiang's startling mating net that snared Expert Patrick McCartney at The Asheboro Open 54.

Sincerely,

Tom Hales

So what happens in the game against David in the pawn endgame after 28...Bxd3+ 29.Kxd3? I'm wondering specifically about 29...f5 trying to prevent 30.e4 from permanently defending the d5-pawn. If 30.b4 (to prevent the Black King from reaching c5) 30...e4+ gives the black King the e5-square and seems to give Black all the chances. 30.e4 fxe4+ 31.Kxe4 looks bad for White too because of the protected passer and the weak d5. There's also 30.g4 fxg4 31.Ke4 b4 32.Kf5 Kb6 33.Kxg4 Kc5 34.Kh5 Kxd5 35.Kh6 Ke4 36.Kxh7 d5 where Black should win the race. What did David see that I didn't, leading him to discard the pawn endgame as drawn or lost?
