The Case of the Rambunctious Rook
Thinking Outside the Box requires a fresh look at every position on every move. You have to clear your head of opinions you have formed on past moves. It’s not easy to do. Most of us fail to find these possibilities in our games. How many of us, playing White in today’s position, would spend a few minutes cursing our bad luck in not being able to use the large material advantage we have, taking the a-pawn when it advanced and sulking away with a draw?
Well our hero today found another route. He found one amazing way to use the rook to his advantage. It’s hard to believe, but within a few moves, there is a mate threat that requires black to part with his bishop, leaving white with a mop up win. Great stuff from the former Correspondence World Champion!
